Billy Elliot Celebrates Its 5th Birthday

26 04 2010

It’s hard to believe that the musical Billy Elliot is celebrating its 5th birthday this spring. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I went to see the film at the cinema and now it’s a global hit.

To celebrate the shows continued success, the 19 boys who all played the role of Billy throughout the shows time appeared on stage together during the live production at the end of March. The three men responsible for the show, Stephen Daldry, Lee Hall and Elton John also joined the cast, (both past and present), with their families for what was a busy night at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

What has amazed the three men most of all is the success that the musical has achieved in other countries such as America and Japan. It seemed unlikely that a tale about an 11 year old dancer living in the North East of England, during the mining strikes would appeal to as wide an audience as it has.
