After a dark Winter on Broadway which saw the closure of over 30 shows, including long running musical productions such as Hairspray and Spamalot it seems that Winter has thawed and things are looking up thanks to a number of serious plays. Playwright and Pulitzer prize-winner David Mamet has announced he will be directing his fourth play in the last two years called Race, which will open on Broadway this November and new play, Reasons to Be Pretty, written by Neil LaBute opened last week to great reviews.
The rise in theatre numbers going to see serious plays may also be due to the many credible actors currently treading the Boards on Broadway such as Jane Fonda, Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon. Many producers will be hoping that this is an upward trend and that the days of multiple big name shows closing is very much in the past.
