The government has announced that event promoters need to toughen up when it comes to ticket security. So what does this mean for the theatre? We have all found ourselves at one time or another, missing out on that play or musical we wanted to see, only to find that there are tickets available on the internet for double the price.
The theatre is already going some way towards fighting the touts when they launched their theatre ticket resale service back in December, but the government want to go even further and are holding talks with event promoters with the aim of trying to make ticket sales fairer for the genuine fans.
Today much of the ticket touting is carried out online, but those running these sites argue that they make buying tickets much safer than meeting touts on the street.
The main aim of the talks is to find a way of preventing touts from taking as large majority of the tickets before the fans can get to them. Anything that stops us from having to pay extortionate prices to watch our favourite productions can only be a good thing.
