The effects of this recession may be set to hit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. After the collapse of its box office computer system last June which saw the resignation of its director Jon Morgan, the festival was already struggling. The recession means that the festivals board are now applying to funding bodies for loans and grants. It is estimated that the board may need up to £6,000,000 with £300,000 over the next three months alone to cover basic running cost alone.
Added to this the festival’s board have also estimated that they expect ticket sales for this year’s festival to be down by 10%, and sponsorship falling between 15% and 50% over the next two years.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is currently the world’s largest arts festival. Let’s hope it stays that way!
