Born in 1917 Lena Horne was born in New York to a middle class African American family. From the young age of 16 Horner started on the path to her showbiz career by auditioning and winning a role as a chorus dancer at the well known Cotton Club. Later she went on to perform at one of New York’s most unusual clubs known as Cafe Society Downtown. Unusual because it was a non-segregated venue, which was obviously vary rare during the 1940’s

Throughout her long career Horne broke down many racial barriers and always had a strong stance on racism. She will be missed by many.
