Green Day Hit Broadway With a Punk Musical

Last year I wrote a post detailing how plans were in place to create a musical based on Green Days 2004 concept album American Idiot. Now it’s spring and the musical opened on Broadway this week. As you’d except the show is very different from previous hit Broadway musicals. Instead of the usual clichés this show tells the tale of teenage pregnancy and drug abuse, all to loud, punk guitar music.

The musical does not contain a lot of dialogue and is mainly taken up with dancing and songs from the American Idiot album. There is however a lot of anticipation that this musical could potentially be as successful as other rock operas such as Tommy, The Who’s hit musical.
