The Producers, written by Mel Brooks has long been a Musical presence in both the West End and Broadway. It has even been adapted for film starring big names such as Uma Thurman, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. But are Germany audiences ready for a production of the hit musical in their own country?
The show which is set to open in mid May in Berlin and has had a few changes made to it ready for its new German audience, one of the most obvious being the replacement of swastikas on banners for pretzels. This is due to the fact that displaying the swastika in public is banned.
So how will German audiences react to this stripping down of Hitler? Will they accept the musical for its comedic appeal ? One person who will be more interested than most is Mel Brooks who is staying away from the Berlin production stating that “I would have to fear facing some mentally disturbed sharpshooter who wants to have it out with me for stripping the fuhrer of his honour”. I guess we will all have to wait and see?
