Mother Bruce at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow

17 12 2008

Panto Season is upon us and it’s time for watching actors with wacky makeup, sequin trousers and multicoloured wigs, performing the plays we all know and love. At the Tron theatre in Glasgow which is famous for its Christmas shows however, they have decided to put a twist on the conventional pantomime and opted to tell the story of Mother Goose in the form of Mother Bruce. The play sees an amalgamation of other pantomimes, with the appearance of Aladdin along with characters from the Wizard of Oz who get caught up in the story. The panto tells the story of Mother Bruce, played by George Drennan and her son, played by Mark Prendergast, who, upon facing eviction, discover that their pet Australian spider can spin golden thread. The baddie in this story, takes the form of Alexander Salamander who is Mother Bruce’s lost husbands brother, with the heroine as Samolina, who wears a bunny glove puppet.

The set captivates the audience with its fair share of glitter and tartan, and keeps the audience laughing with its mocking of rival theatres and Disney style songs.

The show by Gordon Dougall and Fletcher Mathers has a musical score which can only be described as cheesy, but at the same time provides entertainment for both adults and children alike.
