The musical Oliver has now opened at Theatre Royal and is already the fastest selling show in the history of the West End. Much of the success of the ticket sales will be due to the TV show I’d Do Anything, which saw Jodie Prenger winning the role of Nancy. Another star drawing in the crowds is Rowan Atkinson playing the pick-pocket Fagin, who is said to steal the show with his comic timing and ability to make the audience feel sympathetic towards the character.
This production is much bigger than those that have gone before and includes a cast of 150 children (3 groups of 50) to take turns on the show each night. It has been reported though that some of these children are earning less than £20 a performance. Given the costs necessary to travel to and from the venue these children’s parents will surely be picking up the bill.
The show is set to be a hit in the West End for months to come with many seats taken up to July. Unfortunately Rowan Atkinson has only signed up to the role of Fagin for six months so get your tickets fast before they are all taken up.
