Theatre tickets can be pretty pricey these days so when we do go to see a play or show we expect the experience to be an enjoyable one. However if the acoustics of the theatre are unsuitable even the best shows can lead to us walking away feeling very disappointed. Going to the theatre is a form of escapism which more and more of us are choosing to partake in, but if the poor acoustics cause us to be distracted then how can we truly become immersed in the show.
It is much harder for older theatres to resolve this problem but it must be an integral part of the design for any new builds. The SAGE theatre in Gateshead is a good example of this, where the acoustic design was one of the highest priorities and designed in collaboration with the buildings architect. The ceiling of a theatre can have a major effect on the quality of acoustics. From stretch ceilings to panelled ceilings there are plenty of options to choose from but what makes the SAGE different is that its main hall has a moveable ceiling. For greater clarity of voice and piano the ceiling can be lowered which also results in a more intimate atmosphere. Alternatively if the performance involves a large symphonic orchestra the ceiling can be set higher.
Next time you go to the theatre do a bit of research into the acoustics of the venue and it may save you coming away with a headache.
