Many businesses are now struggling with the effects of the credit crisis but not the West End! It appears that in these troubling times many people are opting to take their mind off things by taking a trip to the west end to see feel-good musicals.
Among the most popular are Mamma Mia, Wicked and Hairspray. This popularity has only been helped by TV shows such as I’d Do Anything, which sees the winner Jodie Prenger staring in the Musical Oliver at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane next month.
Those employed to advertise the theatres, by handing out leaflets on the street and wearing custom polo shirts with the shows name printed on are having no problem pulling in the crowds. Over the past twelve months box office receipts reached their second highest figure ever recorded, with advanced bookings currently standing at £58 million.
Unfortunately West End plays are not doing as well. Some plays have even closed early with many other theatres introducing discounted ticket offers.
Broadway is currently not fairing as well as the West End with some shows such as Hairspray and Grease due to close. Many produces are worried that over the next twelve months the West End may head in the same direction. Let’s hope not!
