It seems today that more and more TV celebrities are taking to the stage in major productions. Just a few of these are Lenny Henry making his stage debut in Othello, Graham Norton in La Cage aux Folles as Albin and now Jerry Springer is to star in Chicago as the character Billy Flynn; But does this mean that the quality of these productions will decline. Springer openly admits that he will find the singing difficult and Henry has stated that he fully expects that “the knives will be out” when referring to critics.
Do we really want TV celebrities in the theatre giving mediocre performances when there are much better performers lining up to take on these roles. It appears that these celebrities are able to create a lot of publicity for their relevant productions but the proof will be in the performances.
